Nez Perce Indian named 'Steps'

Original cabinet Card photograph of the Nez Perce Indian named 'Steps' by Bailey, Dix and Mead. Fort Randall, Dakota Territory, 1882.

This is from a rare series of 24 photographs published by Dix & Mead. The star of the series was #1, Sitting Bull himself. This is #3, Steps.

On the back is printed:
"A Nes Perce Indian, who escaped escaped from his band, while surrounded in the bad lands of Nebraska by Gen'l Miles, in 1878. He then joined Sitting Bull's band of Uncapapa Sioux Indians. He lost his feet above the ankles, also his right hand by being frozen, having been caught in one of the severe snow storsm, 21 years ago."
